Our Poultry

We currently have two types of poultry on our farm: Chickens, and Ducks! We are a National Poultry Improvement Plan participant, and our flock receives annual testing for the avian flu. We are legally allowed to sell our poultry and hatching eggs! We hatch chicks until mid summer and often use any remaining poultry for fresh meat to feed our family. Not to mention our layers who keep us full with fresh delicious eggs!

Current Poultry Breeds : Silver Lace Wyandottes, Rhode Island Reds, Red Sex Links (Cinnamon Queens), Rouen Ducks, Barred Rocks and Black Sex Links.

Here is some more information about why chickens and ducks are useful to us:

Chickens

Chickens are a homestead staple, valued for their versatility and ease of care.

  • Egg Production: Reliable daily egg layers.

  • Meat: Dual-purpose and meat breeds provide a steady meat source.

  • Pest Control: They eat insects, reducing garden pests.

  • Composting Helpers: Their manure enriches compost and soil.

Ducks

Ducks are hardy, productive birds that thrive in a variety of environments.

  • Eggs: Excellent layers, especially in colder months.

  • Pest Control: Devour slugs, snails, and bugs in gardens.

  • Meat: Some breeds provide rich, flavorful meat.

  • Low Maintenance: Generally more disease-resistant than chickens.
